Analysis - Natural Light Relationship Portraiture in Autumn.

This Folio has taught me a lot. How to organise photoshoot’s, locations for the shoots and delegating time for this folio and other class assignments. It has been an experience that i will reflect on and learn an extensive amount of positive and negative outcomes so I can do things better next time.

Researching for this was quite easy because I knew what I wanted to do but finding other photographers as inspiration was more difficult than originally thought.
On a Wednesday outing with Tess we went to an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery to see PROMO: Prime time. In a section there were nice couple/intimate portraits from Offspring.  I thought they’d be perfect for my couple shoot.  The internet was pretty helpful.

Organising the shoots and conducting them was the big learning curve. I had never organised one before so having to ask people and wording it was a learning experience. But because they were friends I think it was easier than getting models. I had a lot of trouble with knowing what I wanted the models to do. I definitely need to work on that. Another big factor was the weather on some days I had shoots booked. I just had to do my best and get the best results I could.

No Post Production.  Natural Light portraiture shouldn't have anything done to it.

The other problem with the folio was having all the shoots shot in JPEG instead of RAW. This has been explained and cleared up with my teachers. (Which I am very grateful for) Definitely a  mistake that has impacted everything this whole semester not just with this assignment but in other classes as well.

But Overall these 10 photograph are my strongest with portraying the above and I’m pleased with the outcome.

Research for Location Folio

There are 3 photographic styles that I would like to photograph.

Light photography

Macro photography

Natural light portraiture

The one that I have chosen to do is Natural Light Portraiture.
My thoughts for this folio is to photograph relationships that are around me. e.g. Love, Frienship and family.

Relationships

Also using all the techniques we have learnt in class.

Back Lit Portraiture

Window Light

Going into this Assignment I didn't really know any famous photographer's that did this sort of photography. I found a couple that I liked.

Assignment 4 - Film Noir

Film Noir

You are required to produce a studio photograph that uses either the chiaroscuro lighting style of the great Renaissance artists or the dramatic lighting of a Film Noir movie. The chiaroscuro image can be a portrait or a still life.

The Chiaroscuro could reflect the mood and drama of a Caravaggio style painting.

The film Noir image could almost be a still extracted  from a movie, full of meaning and intent over and above the simple intent of the portrait photographer.

Assignment 2 - Group Portrait

You are required to produce 1 portrait of a group of 4-5 people, it is for their self-promotion for their website/cd cover.

"COLOURZ"
(Girl band from the 1980s)
Canon 600D
ISO100 42 mm f16 1/200 (White balance - Sunlight)

Lighting/set up: One soft box/flash to the right of the coach. and another one behind the left of the coach. Camera in front on eye level to the girls sitting on the coach.

My Analysis/Opinion: I like how black the background is, it gives the colours that they are wearing the vibrance that the 80's had. Good contrast, good composition for a CD cover I think. Not too close together but enough space around the girls to play with cropping and other effects. I would have liked to of had some better costumes for the girls but the clothes they had worked good.  And maybe some props could have been used or a better lighting style but I'm happy with what I have and I think that I would actually use this for a CD cover.

Chiaroscuro lighting - Using light to convey emotion and drama.

WORKSHOP
Work in small groups and using simple backgrounds and flash lights, produce a range of studio photographs that convey the feel and style of either the great Renaissance artists or that of a film noir.

Practicing: The light directly above the model on the right of her. Flagged so it wouldn't hit Scotty because we wanted him to be a silhouette. and then a light that had a honeycomb (don't remember the real term) over it so make a back lit background to split up the subject and background.
That is for the first picture.

Set up for the next two: Same as the to one but we added a fill/soft light to the left of the model to get some more light on the left of the models face. But I don't think that it worked as well as they would have hoped.  Then we added in a flag in front of the fill light so it wouldn't get on Scotty again.

My Opinion: Could have had some more light on my right hand which has the glass in my hand but I guess that is the style that they were going for.
